The Dayton Flyers got revenge on their Mid-West rival the St. Johns Johnnies in the Quarterfinals of the MCLA Nationals Tournament. In last year’s semi-final matchup between the two clubs, the Flyers were stunned by the Johnnies 14-4 in FC Dallas’s home stadium. This year however was a different story. Dayton rolled to a 17-9 victory against the Minnesota powerhouse.

“It was undisputable the Dayton was the better team today” said senior attackman Chris Jehling about the win; “we knew who we were facing and held nothing back. We shut down their offense and blanked their defense with 17 goals and nearly 50 shots.” Jehling finished the game with a tournament high 5 goal game.

The Flyers had already faced the Johnnies this year when the club made a trip to St. Paul, MN to face at the time the #2 and 3 teams St. Johns and St. Thomas. Dayton beat St. Johns on that trip and had completely shut down the Johnnies senior attackman Brian Strauss. They mimicked their tactics from the first matchup and again made seemingly Strauss seem helpless. With the final score amounting to 17-9.

The Dayton Flyers returned to Dallas, Texas this year again with the #5 seed in the tournament, however this time without the stars in their eyes. First round action paired the Flyers against California’s UC-Santa Cruz.

Dayton wasted no time and took an early lead in the first quarter of play, however the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs did not go lay down and gave the Dayton senior goalie Brian Eisenhardt some trouble and evened the score by the end of the first. Dayton’s defense struggled in the first, but coach Gary Pottebaum met with the defense before the start of the second to ‘regroup.’ However, it was a rain delay late second quarter that helped the Flyers reconfigure their strategy.

Dayton exploded after the 30 minute rain delay and ended up leading at half 10-7. It was all Dayton from here on out allowing only 1 second half goal ending in a Dayton victory 15-8.

UD Men’s Lacrosse Seniors:

Great job in Nationals guys, we’ll be back next year...

The Dayton Flyers avenged their 2007 MCLA Division II semi-final playoff loss in a hard fought 15-9 shootout over a deep and talented SJU team.

Both teams came out firing on all cylinders and despite a pair of three minute stick penalties against Dayton in the first half, the Flyers defense was able to hold on - leading to an even six to six score at the half. Senior captain Chris Jehling proved once again why he is considered one of the nation’s top attackmen, with a five goal / two assist effort against a relentless SJU defense. Senior goalie Brian Eisenhardt came up big for the Flyers, making a number of key point-blank stops to hold SJU to only three goals in the second half. Steven Hurst also did a tremendous job on the defensive end, containing SJU standout attackman Brian Strauss to zero goals and three assists on the day.

Flyers Go 1-1 in Minnesota

After a bleak first half by the Flyers, a second half surge helped spark a huge comeback win against the home Boilermakers. Down 9-1 at one point, and 10-3 at half, Dayton battled back to force overtime from a last minute tying goal by midfielder Scott Hunsaker. A last ditch effort by the Boilermakers was prevented by a spectacular save by Flyer goalie Brian Eisenhardt.

The first overtime went back and forth with multiple shots from each team. Finally, half way through the second overtime, midfielder Patrick Weinandy scored the game-winner weaving through three defenders and finding the back of the net. It was his fourth of the game.

A New Dayton in Dallas

The Flyers fell short again in the semi-final game in Nationals against #1 seed Westminster. The Westminster Griffins proved to be too much to handle for the Dayton Flyers. The Flyers, after notching the first goal of the game scored by midfielder Alex Urban, came out flat and trailed early in the game. The Flyer defense was no match for the Griffins in the first half. The Griffin’s attack took control of the game not only offensively but defensively by securely riding the Flyers during clearing situations. Dayton goalie Brian Eisenhardt struggled to find his open teammates due to the heavy riding Westminster inflicted on the Flyers.

Trailing 9-1 at halftime, the Flyers did not give up hope. Stellar second half play from the defense kept the Flyers alive allowing only 1 goal occurring in the fourth quarter. This allowed the Flyers to mount a comeback. They scored 5 goals in the second half, but in the end fell short to a tough Westminster team 10-6.

“We are going to make some changes,” Dayton coach Charlie Mark said. “We only lost five seniors, we are coming back with 50 guys. We are coming back here next year.”

Next season holds high hopes for the young Flyers team. Stay Tuned…….
